Aftercare

Congrats, babe! You’ve got some brand-new art on your body—but along with that, you’ve got a fresh little wound that needs some TLC. Taking care of your tattoo might feel a little intimidating, but don’t worry! With the right routine, you’ll heal up beautifully.

The Bandage (aka Your Tattoo’s Little Cozy Blanket)

In my studio, I use a bandage called Second Skin—it’s an adhesive bandage that seals in the magic while your body starts to heal. Keep it on for four to five days, and during that time, you’ll probably notice a little “ink sack” forming under it. This is just excess ink, plasma, and healing fluids—totally normal, I promise!

When it’s time to gently remove the bandage, don’t just rip it off like a band-aid (ouch!). Instead, stretch down the edges away from the center of your tattoo. Once it’s off, wash your tattoo with warm water and a gentle, unscented, antibacterial soap. Do this twice a day or anytime your tattoo gets exposed to irritants. Pat it dry with a clean towel—no rubbing or scratching!

Fun Idea: Fresh tattoos love clean things—so now’s the perfect time to swap out for fresh bedsheets, clean towels, and comfy clothes to keep your healing process smooth.

The Healing Stage (aka the “Why Am I So Itchy?” Stage)

After removing your bandage, your tattoo might feel dry and itchy—once again, totally normal! You can moisturize with a gentle, unscented lotion, but don’t overdo it (a little goes a long way!). And no matter how tempting it is—do NOT scratch or pick at it. Let your body do its thing!

While healing, try to avoid heavy sweating (sorry gym rats), prolonged sun exposure, and soaking in water (no pools, baths, or hot tubs for now). Showering is totally fine, though—just don’t let the water blast your tattoo directly for too long.

Keeping the Tattoo Bright & Beautiful

Once your tattoo is fully healed, keep it moisturized, for a couple weeks, and then all the time, for the rest of your life. If you’re heading out in the sun, slather on at least SPF 15 sunscreen to keep it looking fresh and vibrant.

And of course, if you ever have any questions about the healing process, reach out—I’m always happy to help. Stay groovy, healthy and excellent.
